A Word from Shane's Mom About the Scholarship Fund
Truthfully, the idea for the scholarship came from a high school friend of mine. I was still in the throws of my grief and I think she believed it would not only be a good way to honor the memory of the unique person that Shane had become but also to give me purpose.
Indeed, it was an excellent idea and I agreed immediately. The idea for it to be a soccer scholarship was mine. Shane loved playing soccer and often talked about playing professionally. In thinking of that, I realized that in the south there are plenty of scholarships for football, baseball, tennis and even golf, but very few for soccer.
I know that there must be other students, like Shane, in our community who love playing soccer but see very little reward for their dedication to the sport. With all that in mine a soccer scholarship seemed to be the most logistical thing to do in Shane's honor.
